The 2017 WannaCry attack serves as a warning against ransomware and what could happen if your computer gets infected. All your documents, your entire work, family photos and anything else you keep on your computer gets encrypted, and you can only get your data back if you pay someone a ransom in Bitcoin. Fortunately, there are measures to protect your files against such attacks, and a good example is Cyber Prot. It's designed specifically for ransomware prevention, and it relies on a modern and effective detection method, to stop any ransomware dead in its tracks before it has the chance to do anything on your computer.

You can test the software for free, without encountering any significant limitations. It comes in a small package, and it can be installed in no time, on any modern Windows system. You don't have to install any prerequisite tools or services, and you don't need to worry if you already have an antivirus program installed, because Cyber Prot won't cause any conflicts.

There's not much you have to do besides installing Cyber Prot on your computer. Its scanning engine and other security systems are turned on by default, so you can just minimize the program to the system tray and focus on your day-to-day tasks. If a piece of ransomware manages to slip through your antivirus' defenses and tries to encrypt your files, Cyber Prot will catch it in the act and terminate the threat immediately.

The user interface is something you may be familiar with if you have used other antivirus programs or maintenance utilities before. It comes with a dashboard, on which you can find general information, like the number of quarantined files, whitelisted folders or events that require your attention. You can explore other sections of the interface via navigation tabs, to find a few general settings, a list of quarantined files, as well as options for adding applications and folder paths to a whitelist, to prevent the application from affecting corrupted or recovered files and applications that need to make legitimate changes to your files.

Cyber Prot may look simple on the surface, but you will find some powerful features under its hood. Its proactive protection will keep you safe against ransomware when you work with items or in places that are usually targeted by these threats, such as your Documents folder or email attachments. However, the program's heuristic analysis capabilities are what make it shine the most. This kind of feature is usually found in the top antivirus programs on the market, and it helps defend against new and unidentified threats. Instead of relying solely on a list of ransomware definitions, Cyber Prot keeps constant watch over your files and reacts immediately if it detects unusual behavior. In other words, if it notices an application trying to encrypt your files, it will block it right away, regardless of whether the application is on the definitions list or not.

With Cyber Prot working on your computer, ransomware won't be among the things you have to worry about.

Pros

The software can protect your files against ransomware attacks. It comes with proactive protection and heuristic analysis capabilities. It works quietly in the background, and it doesn't get in your way.

Cons

There are no obvious design flaws or functionality gaps to address.
